Choosing male and female threaded fittings

Start by identifying the two ends being connected. A female thread is inside the fitting; a male thread is on the outside. A male/female pairing alone does not establish compatibility: the thread size and standard must also match.

Pipe diameter and thread size are different measurements

A table may show the pipe diameter in millimetres and the thread size in inches. Specify both when ordering. For example, check the pipe-side and thread-side entries separately in the Female-Threaded Adapter table.

Elbow, tee or straight adapter?

For a change in direction, review the Female-Threaded Elbow. For a branch, see the Female-Threaded Tee. A straight transition may use a Male-Threaded Adapter. The installation geometry determines the final choice.

When should a union be considered?

A union may be appropriate where a connection needs to be separated for servicing. Compare the Female-Threaded Swivel Union and Male-Threaded Swivel Union, checking both the mating size and removal space.

Before installation

• Confirm the pipe diameter and equipment-side thread size.
• Match the male/female ends and thread standards.
• Check orientation, connection distance and service access.
• Follow the manufacturer's applicable assembly and sealing instructions.
